In the 1960s, racial segregation plagued the U.S. and tensions were building between the black and white populations. Dr. King had observed and spoken out against the segregation but was Sparked into action when a black woman named Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus and give her seat up front to a white man. Inspired by Mohandas Gandhi, Dr. King preached non-violent protest as a solution to the problem. He was an unparalleled public speaker who also organized and lead many public spectacles like a march on Washington. In 1964 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to non-violently help end racial segregation and discrimination in the United States. Sadly, four years later in 1968, on March 29th, Dr. King stood on the balcony of his hotel room and was killed by a shot in the head. Riots broke out across the country as news of Dr. Kings death spread. However, many held fast to Dr. Kings teachings and continued to practice non-violent civil disobedience out of respect to Dr. Kings wishes. |
